At the 1971 award presentations of the New York Film Critics on Jan. 23, 1972, at Sardi’s, Hackman was honored as best actor for his role in The French Connection. Among the presenters were actors Paulette Goddard, Robert Ryan, Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach, and director George Roy Hill who just completed filming Slaughterhouse-Five. Goddard proudly showed us a recently published book by her late husband Erich Maria Remarque titled, Shadows in Paradise. Remarque, who died in 1970, was a German author best known for All Quiet on the Western Front (1929).
