Carroll O’Connor
Archie Bunker, the hilarious working class bigot of Queens in All in the Family (CBS 1971-79), came to see Zero Mostel in Ulysses in Nighttown on March 28, 1974, at the Winter Garden on Broadway. O’Connor appeared in the original production of the play in 1958, which also starred Mostel. Both the earlier production and the current one were directed by Burgess Meredith. Reminiscing with O’Connor in the dressing room, Mostel reminded him of the time Mostel did a poetry reading at Carnegie Hall. “I read a particularly poignant piece, in Yiddish, of the ghetto. I had everyone in tears. You were there, and you were crying too. And you’re not even Jewish!”
