The 1978 Academy Awards show was playing on oversized TV screens at Studio 54 on April 3. I went there to join the boldface names engaged with the festivities being played out on the Left Coast. They included Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, Mariel Hemingway, Bess Myerson, Andy Warhol, and Brooke Shields. It was so crowded, not an empty chair available, that co-owner Steve Rubell sat on the floor with Andy Warhol and Yul Brynner. As I walked over to claim a vacant spot, Brynner gave me the once-over with his monocle.
