There was a brief interlude in 1969 when the tabloids spotlighted dancers in the buff, waitresses in the raw, even feminist car washers in the nude (to the delight of editors hard pressed for legit news on a slow day). A similar splash of feminine flesh erupted in the summer of 2015 when topless women emerged in Times Square to panhandle in exchange for posing for leering tourists. On December 29, 1969, Xaviera Hollander, later to be renowned as the Happy Hooker, presented herself in her birthday suit at columnist Earl Wilson’s office, above the Broadway Theater. She slipped off her topcoat and—voila!—she announced she’ll be Earl’s topless secretary for the day. Just the right fodder for a juicy story in the next edition of the New York Post.
