Faberge president George Barrie hosted the annual awards with Cary Grant as master of ceremonies. (Now that he’s retired from film making, Grant serves as a member of the Faberge board.) Stewart played accordion at the Princeton Triangle Club. The prominent stage director, Joshua Logan, invited him to work in summer stock in Massachusetts — not to act but to play the accordion in the tea room. “My first night was a disaster,” he recalled. “The second night I knew I was finished when the patrons complained that my accordion was ruining their appetite. So I worked in the theater, but outside the building where I painted the sets.”
