I joined 1,200 persons at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s tribute to the all-time grand master of dance on April 30, 1973. Several hours of film showed Fred Astaire whirling through intricate dance maneuvers with the likes of Joan Crawford, Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland, Rita Hayworth and, of course Ginger Rogers. Besides running the dance gamut from rapid-fire tap to ballet, he also sang Kern, Gershwin and Berlin in that haunting, insinuating voice. Ms. Rogers came in person to participate in the public adulation of her dance partner. They made many films together beginning with Flying Down to Rio in which they danced the now famous Continental.
