Gloria Swanson

One of the few actresses to survive the stone age of silent slapstick comedy to emerge as one of Hollywood’s superstars—since that fateful day when Cecil B. DeMille chose her to create a post-World War One liberated woman in a series of silent films—this national treasure has gone on to other accomplishments. Gloria Swanson was a pioneer-owner-member of United Artists and, after having survived the transition of silents-to-talkies, became one of the first film stars to brave television in 1948. You recall her phenomenal success in her comeback role in Sunset Boulevard (1950) and then Broadway. The actress added another facet to her amazing career. She transformed into an accomplished sculptress. On April 22, 1977, this living legend, now 78, invited me to her New York home to demonstrate proof of her talent. She was particularly fond of the larger than life-size bust she created.
